How much does a custom iron front door cost?
Cost depends on the size of the opening, single versus double, whether the top is arched or square, how much ornamental ironwork is involved, and the glass and hardware selected. A clean square-top single door costs considerably less than an arched double with hand-formed scrollwork. We measure the opening and provide a free written estimate before any work begins, and financing is available.
Do iron front doors make a house hotter?
A properly built iron door should not. Modern iron entry doors are built with a thermal break and insulation inside the door slab, and weather sealing around the perimeter, so they perform comparably to other quality entry doors. The doors that develop a reputation for being hot are typically thin uninsulated slabs without a thermal break.
Are iron front doors secure?
Yes, and security is one of the main reasons people choose them. A welded steel or iron door slab in a steel frame is substantially harder to force than a hollow-core or timber door. Any glass is tempered and typically protected behind ironwork, and we fit multi-point locking hardware where you want the extra security.
Can you build an iron door to fit my existing opening?
Yes. Everything is fabricated to the measurements of your actual opening rather than to a stock size, which matters most on arched and older openings where nothing off the shelf fits. If you would rather change the opening — going from a single to a double, or adding an arch — that is possible too, though it becomes a construction job as well as a door job.
How do iron doors hold up near the coast?
Well, provided the finish is right for the exposure. Salt air is hard on metal, so coastal properties in Ventura, Oxnard and Malibu need a properly prepared and coated finish, and periodic care. We specify the finish based on how exposed your entry actually is rather than applying the same coating everywhere.
