This is the first question almost everyone asks, and most websites answer it with "it depends." That is true, but it is not useful. Here is what a driveway gate actually costs in Ventura County in 2026, what moves the number, and where people most often get surprised.
One thing to say up front: these are installed ranges for real projects in this county, not material-only prices. A quote that looks dramatically cheaper than the bottom of these ranges is usually leaving something out — most often the electrical, the post footings, or the safety devices.
The Short Answer
- Basic single swing gate, steel, simple design: $3,000 – $6,000 installed
- Double swing gate, ornamental iron: $6,000 – $15,000 installed
- Sliding or rolling gate, steel or iron: $5,000 – $12,000 installed
- High-end custom estate gate: $15,000 – $40,000+ installed
Those ranges hold for most of Ventura County. They shift upward in Malibu, on steep hillside lots, and anywhere the gate has to be built to a coastal specification.
What Actually Drives the Price
1. The width of the opening
This is the single biggest factor, and it is not linear. A 12-foot opening and a 20-foot opening are not 60% apart in cost — they are further apart than that, because a wider gate needs heavier stock, deeper footings, and often a different operator class to move the extra weight without tearing itself apart. If your opening is wide, ask about splitting it into a double swing before assuming a single leaf.
2. Swing versus slide
Neither is universally cheaper. A swing gate is simpler to build but needs level ground and clear space to open into. A sliding gate needs a run-back area alongside the driveway, plus either a ground track or a cantilever assembly. 3. Material and finish
Steel and wrought iron are the workhorses. Aluminum costs less to move and does not rust, but it dents and it does not carry the same presence. The finish matters more than people expect: a powder coat over properly prepped and primed steel is a different product from paint on bare metal, and the price difference shows up again in year seven rather than in the quote.

4. Ornamental work
Scrollwork, custom pickets, laser-cut panels and forged detail are all hand labor. This is the part of the budget you control most directly. A structurally identical gate can vary by several thousand dollars purely on how much detail is in it.
5. The operator and access control
The gate is the half people picture. The other half is the mechanism. A residential operator, safety loops, photo eyes, a keypad, a remote or two, and a way for the mail carrier and your guests to get in — that package usually runs $2,000 to $6,000 depending on the operator class and how much access control you want. 6. The part nobody quotes: electrical and civil work
A motorized gate needs power at the gate. If there is no circuit near the driveway, trenching and running conduit is real work with real cost, and it can add anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand depending on distance and what is in the way. Post footings are the same story — a gate hangs off two points and those points have to be set in concrete deep enough to hold a heavy swinging load for decades.
When a quote looks unusually low, this is almost always what has been left out of it.
A Realistic Mid-Range Example
A double swing ornamental iron gate on a 14-foot opening, moderate scrollwork, powder-coated, with a residential operator, photo eyes, a keypad and two remotes, on a lot that already has power near the driveway, will typically land somewhere between $9,000 and $14,000 installed in Ventura County. Add a long conduit run or a hillside footing situation and that moves up.
Where People Regret Saving Money
Three places, consistently:
- Undersized frame stock. A gate built too light for its span sags, and no amount of re-hanging fixes a frame that is deflecting. This is the failure we get called out to most often.
- Shallow footings. Cheap to skip, expensive to correct, because correcting it means taking the posts out.
- An operator sized for a lighter gate. It will work at first. It will not work in year three.

- What gauge or wall thickness is the frame, and what is the span?
- How deep are the post footings, and is that included?
- Is running power to the gate in the quote, or excluded?
- Which operator, and what gate weight is it rated for?
Two quotes that look $4,000 apart often turn out to be the same price once all four answers are on the table.
