Ornamental iron belongs on that architecture in a way it does not belong on every house, which is why so much of our Camarillo work is traditional ironwork: arched tops, scrolled detail, spear or cap finials, finished in a satin black or a hand-rubbed bronze rather than a flat modern coat.
Then there is the other Camarillo. Out toward Las Posas Estates and Somis the lots get long and agricultural, the approaches get wider, and the job changes completely. Those gates are about span and durability rather than detail. Wider openings need heavier frame stock and a bigger operator class, and the dust and grit of an unpaved or partly paved approach is hard on a ground track.
The practical version of that second point: if your approach is not fully paved, say so early. A cantilever sliding gate carries no ground track and simply has nothing for dust and gravel to pack into, and it is very often the right call on rural Camarillo and Somis properties.
For Spanish and Mediterranean homes we fabricate ornamental gates designed around the elevation rather than pulled from a catalogue. Arch profile, picket spacing, the weight of the scrollwork and the finish all get chosen for the house. This is genuinely hand work, and it is also the part of the budget you control most directly — a restrained design on a well-built frame costs meaningfully less than an elaborate one, and looks better than an elaborate design done cheaply.
For the Mission Oaks and newer tracts, cleaner designs are more common: vertical bar, horizontal slat, a simple flat top. The underlying build is identical — properly sized frame, welds ground back, real prep and a powder coat over primer. The difference is only what the front of it looks like.
Camarillo sits close enough to the coast that finish matters more than it does inland. We spec accordingly, and on properties toward the Oxnard plain we will usually recommend the coastal package: galvanizing, zinc-rich primer, marine coat and stainless hardware. It adds roughly 10 to 20 percent and roughly doubles the working life.
A basic single swing in steel typically runs $3,000 to $6,000 installed. A double swing in ornamental iron — the most common Camarillo project — more often lands $6,000 to $15,000 depending heavily on how much ornamental detail is in it. Sliding and cantilever gates run $5,000 to $12,000.
The wider agricultural approaches out toward Somis and Las Posas push above those ranges, because span drives material weight and operator class together. That is engineering rather than markup: a gate too light for its opening will sag, and an operator sized below the real gate weight fails early.
As everywhere, the item most often missing from a low quote is running power to the gate. On long rural approaches that can be a substantial trench. Ask whether it is in the price.
Camarillo covers a wide range of property types, and the right gate for a Mission Oaks street frontage is not the right gate for a Somis ranch approach.

It changes the recommendation, yes. A ground-track sliding gate on an unpaved approach packs with dust and grit and becomes a recurring service call. A cantilever gate carries the weight on a counterbalanced beam with no ground track at all, which solves it. A swing gate is also fine if you have the level ground for the arc.
It depends where you are. Closer to the Oxnard plain and the coast, yes — salt carries further inland than people expect, and the difference between a standard finish and a marine specification is roughly double the service life for roughly 10 to 20 percent more. Further up toward the hills it matters less. We will tell you which side of that line your property is on.
Further than most people expect, but there is a point past which a single leaf needs disproportionately heavy stock and a double swing or a sliding gate becomes the better answer. We work that out from your actual opening at the site visit rather than guessing from the phone.
