Estate gates and serious access control for Calabasas, Hidden Hills, the Mulholland Corridor and Monte Nido — built by hand in our Ventura shop and installed by our own crew.

☎ (805) 396-9984On most properties a driveway gate is mainly about appearance and a bit of deterrence. On a lot of Calabasas properties it is doing real work. The gate is the boundary between a public road and a private one, and the access control on it is what determines who gets past. That changes the specification in ways that matter.
Practically, it means we spend more time on the access layer here than almost anywhere else we work: video intercom so you can see who is at the gate before it opens, keypads with codes you can issue and revoke separately, smartphone control so you can let someone in without being home, vehicle detection so it does not open for a pedestrian. It also means safety and reliability are not optional extras — a gate that fails open is a security failure, and a gate that fails closed with you outside it is its own problem.
The second Calabasas constraint is terrain. Canyon and hillside properties around Monte Nido and the Mulholland Corridor bring steep approaches, awkward turning space and long runs back to the nearest power. All three affect what gate is possible and what it costs, and none of them are visible from a phone call. They are what the site visit is for.
The architecture here runs from traditional and Mediterranean estates through to hard-edged contemporary, and the gate should read as part of the property. For traditional elevations that usually means ornamental iron with forged detail and an arched or stepped top. For the modern builds it is more often a flat, quiet design in horizontal slat or vertical bar, sometimes with solid infill panels where privacy from the road matters more than sightlines.
Estate openings are wide, and width drives the whole specification. Heavier frame stock so the leaf does not deflect, hinges or rollers sized for the real weight, and an operator rated for the actual gate rather than the nearest cheaper class. Where an opening is wide enough that a single leaf becomes unwise, a double swing is better engineering as well as a better look.
On long or steep approaches we will also talk to you about where the gate sits relative to the road. A car needs somewhere to pull clear of traffic while the gate opens, and on a canyon road with no shoulder that placement decision is a safety question, not an aesthetic one.
Calabasas sits at the upper end of the county ranges. A double swing in ornamental iron commonly runs $6,000 to $15,000 installed, and larger custom estate gates $15,000 to $40,000 and above. Sliding and cantilever gates on wide approaches run $5,000 to $12,000 before ornamental work.
Access control is a larger share of the budget here than elsewhere. A basic operator with photo eyes, keypad and remotes runs roughly $2,000 to $6,000; adding video intercom, multi-code access management and smartphone control moves that upward. It is worth specifying properly at the start, because retro-fitting an access layer onto a finished installation is always less tidy than building it in.
On canyon and hillside properties, the two line items that most often surprise people are the electrical run and the footings. Long trenching is real work, and a heavy gate on grade needs footings set properly or it goes out of alignment within a couple of seasons. Ask any bidder whether both are in the quote.
Calabasas properties vary enormously — canyon lots in Monte Nido are a different problem from a flat estate approach in The Oaks.

Video intercom, keypads with individually issued codes, remotes, smartphone control, vehicle detection loops and separate pedestrian gates are all common on Calabasas properties. The question worth settling early is who needs to get in and how — family, guests, housekeeping, gardeners, deliveries — because that determines the whole package and it is cleaner to build in than to add later.
It matters a lot, and it is one of the first things we look at. A car has to be able to pull clear of moving traffic while the gate opens. That may mean setting the gate further back from the road than you expected, which in turn affects the footings, the power run and sometimes the gate type. It is a safety decision rather than a style one.
Yes. A good deal of our Calabasas work is deliberately quiet — horizontal slat, vertical bar, flat tops, matte finishes, sometimes solid infill where privacy from the road matters. Fabricating for the specific opening rather than assembling stock panels is what lets the proportions actually match the building.
We supply the drawings and specifications for the submission and build to whatever gets approved. The submission itself is between you and the association. Start it early — approval regularly takes longer than fabricating the gate does.
We are in Ventura, and Calabasas is a normal run for our crew. That matters for service as much as for installation — adjustments, an added remote, a repair in year five.
Sliding, swing, ornamental and modern gates, operators and access control — the full range we build.
Real installed price ranges for 2026, and the three costs most quotes quietly leave out.
Which one your driveway can actually take — usually decided by slope and space, not preference.
